It was an incredible experience - we encountered the remarkable proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, a huge monitor lizard, lots of beautiful birdlife, including hawks and kingfishers, and even an otter! Even though we had seen some of these animals in Sabah earlier in our holiday, the fact that we were alone on the river, without any other tourists, made this truly a special experience.
I’ve done jungle treks in different countries and continents, but my recent trip in Brunei was nothing short of spectacular. If you’re looking for a pristine, off-the-beaten-path jungle adventure, this is it! If you want a commercial, crowded trek, go elsewhere. The jungle trekking was simply amazing, indeed, off-the-beaten track. We did several hikes already in Malaysia, but this was always on boardwalks and often also with others. Now it was just us with our private guide and there were no paths or trails most of the time, it was pure jungle trekking and we had to find our own pathway.
We have hiked in many countries around the world, but hiking in Brunei is now at the top of our favourites. Thanks to the professional and especially enthusiastic guidance of our private guide, we had a proper adventure - finding our own path through unspoiled jungle. This is one of a kind!
Loved the jungle, loved the house, loved the people, hated the mosquitoes! But seriously, absolute epic trip and thank you to our hosts for making this an unforgettable experience. The pickup from the airport was seamless and we were driven to our host's house. The family was very nice and our room was perfect - it gave us plenty of privacy but at the same time, when our daughter was asleep, we enjoyed chatting to our host on the communual terrace. The hike the following day was spectacular. In the morning we did an easy hike so my wife and daughter (six years old) could join. We discussed this with our host the night before. In the afternoon, my wife and daughter stayed home and relaxed at the pool and I went on a more extreme hike. Wow, amazing.
